Interesting, so if I understand grasshopper currently seems to have an advantage on highly customized production for assemblage, etc and rhino cam is more of a one-off for individual milling of a specific object or piece. is there any value in using grasshopper to iterate through many milling possibilities of a single object and then using rhino cam to generate a final toolpath? or would it better to keep the workflow on a single plugin?

Hello,

As I learn more about working with KUKA PRC and its applications, I am wondering what best practices are given the fabrication problem we need to address? for example, when faced with wood milling using many step-downs or a complicated toolpath, is it always a good idea to default to RhinoCAM first given that grasshopper could complicate things? What is the most time efficient choice?

Great!

Yes the cut would be on a 3/4" (19.05 mm) plywood surface, with (3) 1/8" (3.125 mm) step-downs to create a depth of 3/8" The path would be similar like in the image. my only concern is the drill bit angle, I am trying to orient it 45 degrees to the plywood surface to create a specific groove and do the semicircle path. Do you think it would cause too much strain on the tool? I have had experiences where the tool seems to get stuck on the plywood, i am guessing due to strain/ friction? any tips to make milling on plywood smoother would be welcome.

Good evening

I am looking to eventually mill several semicircular and completely round paths on plywood. I am currently starting with developing semicircular toolpath for one semicircle path;  just one pass of the 3/8" tool bit angled at a 45 to surface and (3) 0.125 mm step-downs. is it possible to create a smooth path for this? any similar experiences?

Hi Johannes,

What you suggested seems good. I re worked my trees and data paths and I think it is very close to working at least on a single notch, later I will add solution to rest of notches.although I am having issues with the simulation in terms of the path being milled twice for some reason. has this happened to you before?

Actually I think I made toolpath work for each notch on a board but, when testing on the KUKA it seems to not follow the path as shown on the file. it just comes down and then goes back up to home posiition. Any Reason.? Latest script attached

I see, this was useful and I managed to incorporate tool diameter and stepdown, although, what would you recommend for multi notch milling? milling notches on multiple locations along a Wood board? I almost got the path working  but It seems the kuka is not milling down every notch.

have you had this issue before?

yes, disregard my wrist motion comment. I am trying to think through milling logic of a simple plywood surface. If I were to define a shape in 2d lines to mill into the surface (Like a slot for example or groove) I would need to have drill bit radius to define "spacing" of path lines between shape boundary , I assume.
If I want define a specific depth to mill towards into the wood, would I need to incorporate a stepdown for my tool pathway as well? is this final milling depth dependent on a final toolpath height in my script or should I incorporate stepdowns to reach the desired depth of the toolpath in passes?

Hi,
I need someone to breakdown the logic for a simple flat plane toolpath stepdown to mill an area of wooden surface(same as cnc router) . I am wondering how to mill to a specified depth. is it based on # of stepdowns or velocity of wrist motion? I know it is trickier than milling foam surfaces..any clarification is welcome.
